Side hustles in communities that don’t have as many resources are super important for getting by financially, building wealth and moving up socially. Now Undeserved community is a population that lacks adequate access to essential resources and services. These communities often deal with things like higher unemployment, not enough money to start businesses and fewer resources from the government. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics shows that historically marginalized communities usually have higher unemployment rates than the rest of the country, which really shows why it’s important to have other ways to earn money. So, side hustles can help people get money right away and also open up doors for starting their own businesses down the road.

One of the biggest areas where side hustles are growing is jobs that are more formal and involve services. For example, services like car detailing, taking care of kids, and fixing homes are really popular because they help people in the community right away. Studies show that about 44% of U.S. adults do some kind of side hustle, and even more of those are in lower- to middle-income families (Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System, 2023). These types of jobs usually don’t cost a lot to start and depend a lot on trust and word-of-mouth, which are important in communities that don’t have as many resources.

Also, financial service side hustles are really important. Things like fixing credit, helping with taxes, and giving budgeting advice are in high demand because not everyone knows how to handle money well and there aren’t enough banks in some areas. The Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation said that about 4.5% of U.S. households didn’t have a bank account in 2021 and this was even higher for Black and low-income families. This financial gap gives community entrepreneurs a chance to offer easy-to-use financial help while also making money.

Digital side hustles are opening doors beyond just our local areas. Online reselling, freelancing, and creating content let people reach bigger markets without needing a lot of money upfront. A 2022 McKinsey & Company report showed that digital platforms have given millions of small entrepreneurs a chance to join the global economy, which means they can earn more and grow their businesses. This is especially important in areas that don’t have many jobs.

So, side hustles in underserved communities aren’t just extra money; they’re really important for helping people get ahead economically. By focusing on what people need locally, building trust with the community and using digital tools, people can create steady income and help make the economy stronger overall. As we get better at using technology and getting financial help, side hustles will keep being a key way to close economic gaps and help everyone grow in the long run.
